It started as a large abstract canvas back in 2022/23. I used layering and a paint pouring technique with taped off sections to create a balance of chaos and control. The painting includes a wide range of colours and has a movement and energy about it that mirrors the process behind it.
This technique of pouring paint, which almost appears haphazard, stemmed from an urge to create but let go of detail and perfectionism that started to stunt the enjoyment I had from painting during art school. As I discovered it can take just as long as realism and requires thought and care. You get out what you put in. Georgia Sugg, an artist in her own right, introduced me to her own pouring paintings during the end of lockdown as a means for art therapy. Grateful for the demonstration, I quickly took to it and made a fun series of my own. This painting was one of the last of the paint pouring and closed out the season of that art making process.
While working in my garden one day a gust of wind blew the painting off the easel, causing a tear at the edge. While I did repair the canvas, I felt the artwork needed to take a different direction and here was my solution; I carefully selected 14 square sections of the painting with great consideration, cut them out and each was born into a new artwork of their own, hence the name 'genesis'.
I love the concept that these paintings could end up in as many as 14 different places with 14 different people and all be connected to the same origin with the same story. This is why I think they also work well as triptychs or quads. If you want to purchase one of this limited series, please send me an email, or buy directly on my Etsy store.
